She washed her hands in the sink a short time later and saw red back up lights in the driveway. She leaned toward the window. The landlady struggled to back in and scraped the chain link fence with her bumper. Cyn shook her head. She turned on the burner to sauté the chicken and heard a screech, followed by the sound of crunched plastic.

Cyn looked out the window, and heard Nick enter the front door.

“McInnis just hit our car,” she called out.

“Shit.” He entered the kitchen.

“At least I think she did. I can’t tell what she hit.”

The driver-side mirror on the landlady’s Escort dangled, and the only thing it could’ve made contact with was their Jeep. Nick furled his brow as Mrs. McInnis exited her car and acted like nothing happened. She didn’t survey the damage to her mirror before she headed up the driveway toward the front door. Cyn turned the stove off, to prepare for the uncomfortable conversation. She expected to hear a knock on the door, but a few minutes later, they heard Mrs. McInnis’s door close, followed by the creak of her weight on the stairs.

Cyn’s eyes opened wide. “That’s a hit and run.”

“We don’t even know if she hit us,” Nick said. “Go look for damage.”

Cyn marched down the back steps to the driveway. She used the flashlight on her cell to scan the side of her car. What knocked Mrs. McInnis’s her mirror off? A closer look at the passenger side door panel revealed a long dent. Sixteen inches long and an inch wide, it was the kind of thing yogi Cyn might forgive and live with, if the landlady showed remorse, but Mrs. McInnis’s disregard incensed her. Back inside, she continued to make dinner and wait for an apology that never came. After they ate, Nick did the dishes, while Cyn called Mrs. McInnis. As her cell phone rang, she could hear the landline ring upstairs. Nick turned off the water to listen.

“Maybe I should talk to her.”

Cyn ignored his offer as Mrs. McInnis answered. She was too mad to hand this off.

“Hi, this is Cyn downstairs. We saw what happened out there and wondered if you planned to tell us.” After a pause, she spoke again. “You hit my car and blame me?” She covered the receiver. “She says I parked our car too far from the wall.” Cyn gripped the phone. “My car is damaged.” She pulled the phone from her ear, stunned. “She hung up on me.”

“Let me see the damage,” Nick said. As Cyn followed him out the door, she hit redial on her phone, before Nick had the chance to share his input.

“I need your insurance information,” she said, when Mrs. McInnis answered.

An argument ensued and Nick took the phone from Cyn.

“Listen, we saw the whole thing happen.” He spoke in a calm manner. “You can share your insurance info with us, or we’ll report it as a hit and run.” He paused. Then his face relaxed. “Thanks.” He ended the conversation.
